Dalmore
A distillery which has provoked controversy over the years with its approach to finishing and prices. But the whisky itself is generally an excellent, full-bodied Highland distillate. Older examples distilled in the 1960s are often spectacular. Notable examples are some official bottlings alongside some expressions by James MacArthur, Cadenhead and The Bottlers. The 1960s and 70s bottlings - when not finished - are generally hugely oily and rich with wax, marmalade, chocolate and a bold sherry influence. The best modern examples are generally from independent bottlers who tend not to finish the whisky in the same manner as the owners often do. That means more pure distillery character and less overt cask influence. Check out Signatory's bottlings for some of the best examples. The very old 50 and 60 year old examples by the distillery are utter masterpieces but exceptionally expensive and rare nowadays.
